A 200 hour yoga teacher training is worth it if you want a month of immersive practice and study, and you treat teaching income as a possible bonus rather than the payoff. Purely as a career investment, the math is shaky: US studio trainings typically cost $2,500 to $3,500 in tuition alone (a typical range, treat it as an estimate), while new teachers commonly earn $30 to $60 per class. As an immersion, the math flips completely, because a residential YTT in India starts around $530 for 20 to 28 days including your room and all meals. That is less per night than a hostel. The gap between formats is enormous. A studio YTT in a US city spreads the 200 hours over weekends for three to six months and charges $2,500 to $3,500 for tuition only; you keep paying rent and buying groceries the whole time. A residential intensive abroad compresses it into 20 to 29 days and includes accommodation and food in the price. Now the honest total. Add flights: often $900 to $1,400 round trip to India from the US, less to Greece from Europe. Add a visa, insurance, and spending money. A $535 Rishikesh training realistically lands around $2,000 to $2,300 all in. That is still a month of full board, daily teaching, philosophy and anatomy for less than most US studios charge for tuition alone, with your normal living costs paused instead of running in parallel. Greece at about $2,505 plus a short flight is the compromise for anyone wary of a first trip to India. The residential trade-off is real though: you give up a month of income, and compressing 200 hours into three weeks means long days and less time to digest.

What does the certificate qualify you to do?

Less than the marketing implies, and more than cynics claim. A 200 hour certificate is the yoga world's entry ticket. It qualifies you to teach group classes at gyms and studios that accept it (most do), to teach private clients, and to get insured as a yoga teacher, which is the practical gatekeeper in the US and UK.

It does not qualify you to work with injuries or medical conditions beyond basic modifications, to call yourself a yoga therapist (that is a separate 800+ hour pathway), or to teach specialized populations like prenatal students without further training. And it is not a license in any legal sense; yoga teaching is unregulated, which is exactly why studios lean on certificates and insurance as filters.

Expect to be a wobbly teacher when you finish. Everyone is. The 200 hours build a foundation; the next hundred classes you teach build a teacher. Budget for the reality that most new teachers earn $30 to $60 per class and stitch together a schedule slowly, usually alongside other work.

Does Yoga Alliance registration matter?

Yoga Alliance is a US-based registry, not a government body. Schools register as RYS (Registered Yoga School) and graduates can register as RYT 200 (Registered Yoga Teacher) for an annual fee. Some gyms and studios ask for it, many never check, and plenty of respected teachers let their registration lapse after a few years.

Our advice: choose a school that is Yoga Alliance registered, because the option to register keeps doors open and the standard at least filters out the worst programs. Then decide later whether the annual RYT fee earns its keep for you. What matters far more than the registry is the lineage and reviews of the specific school, so read the recent reviews, not the badge. Who should not do a 200 hour YTT?

Anyone doing it mainly for the money. The teaching economy is oversupplied at the entry level. If income is the goal, a spreadsheet will talk you out of it faster than we can.

Complete beginners. Most schools officially accept all levels, but arriving with under a year of practice means spending the month learning poses instead of learning to teach them. Anyone who cannot take the hit of a bad pick. A mediocre YTT is a real risk, and a month is a lot to lose. Filter hard: hundreds of recent reviews, a named lead teacher, a published daily schedule, and honest answers when you email questions.

People whose real interest is sound, not asana. If gong baths and chimes pull you more than sun salutations do, a 200 hour YTT is the long way round.
