Frequently asked questions

Can Koshi and Zaphir chimes be used indoors?

Yes, they work beautifully indoors. They are small, harmonically tuned instruments designed to respond to gentle, irregular air movement, and a typical home provides plenty if you pick the right spot. Unlike large garden chimes, they are quiet and sized for rooms, present enough to notice across a room but not intrusive during conversation or sleep, and you can also play them by hand with a gentle circular movement. What does Koshi mean?

The name was not chosen for its meaning. Kabir, the French craftsman who created the chime in his Pyrenean workshop, has said it emerged from playful experimentation with sounds rather than any deliberate reference. As a striking coincidence, the Japanese word koshi means the hip or waist, the body's centre of gravity, close to the hara energetic centre, and a Koshi chime's sound likewise radiates from its central resonating core. Which Koshi chime should I choose?

There is no single best one. All four are handcrafted in the French Pyrenees with eight tuned metal rods in a bamboo and resin resonator, and each is tuned to a different element and feel. Terra is deep, warm and grounding. Aqua is clear, bright and flowing. Aria and Ignis each carry their own elemental character. Choose by the mood you want, or get the Set of 4 for the full elemental experience. Read more

Where should I place my chime, and can I use a stand?

Hang it wherever you spend calm time, by a window or doorway, on a balcony or patio, or near a meditation or yoga space, positioned where gentle air movement can reach it. If you would rather display a chime without hanging it, we also offer single chime stands engraved with the Flower of Life, which are easy to disassemble and take with you. Read more

What is the difference between Koshi and Zaphir chimes?

Both are handcrafted in France but differ in build and sound. Koshi chimes have a bamboo resonance tube with a rich, warm, melodic tone, and they need a little more air movement to sound. They come in four elemental tunings: Terra (Earth), Aria (Air), Ignis (Fire) and Aqua (Water). Zaphir chimes use a tube made from recycled fibre materials, giving a crystal-clear sound that lingers and responds to the lightest touch, which makes them lovely to play by hand during sound healing or a yoga session. They come in five seasonal tunings: Crystalide (Spring), Sunray (Summer), Twilight (Autumn), Blue Moon (Winter) and Sufi (Intermediary), plus the Love Echo. Read more
